Winkies Castle

Winkies Castle is the white cottage pictured above, and is one of the oldest buildings in the village, if not the oldest. It dates from the 17c  and originally had a thatched roof.

In 1968 it was bought  by Jack Anderson who owned the Cobblers Shop next door and was therefore saved from being demolished. He never actually lived here, he filled it with his own collection of artifacts and photographs and opened it as a folk museum, his cat “Winkie” resided here though hence the name, well thats the story anyway.

When Jack died he left the cottage and all its contents to Redcar and Cleveland Council on the understanding that it should be preserved for future generations.

On Yorkshire Day 2005 it was re-opened as “Winkies Castle Folk Museum” by Ian Anderson, Jack’s nephew.
