Don’t forget Father Christmas will be visiting Winkies Castle on Thursday 2nd December at 7.15pm, while the carols are being sung around the Christmas Tree in the square.

WINKIES CASTLE is in need of a new RAG RUG so how about popping in to help us to a create our very own work of art?
Rag rug making is a very old craft that is being reinvented and if you thought re-cycling was a recent ‘thing’ well proddy, hooky and clippy rugs were very early re-cycling so if you have an old garment that is past its ‘sell by date’ fetch it along and we can cut it up for our very own rug. Rugs would have been made by ALL the family not just Mum or Gran but DAD and the CHILDREN, both boys and girls, so everyone can come along and have a go.

12TH, 14TH and 15th August – Start making our PRODDY RUG

19th, 21st and 22nd August – PRODDY RUG making and Girl Guiding activities.

26th, 28th – 30th August – PATCHWORK demonstrations.

2nd September – Come along and see how our ‘rug’ is progressing.

As well as the above activities the Guiding Exhibition gives you the opportunity to go back down memory lane and try your hand at tying knots and ties as well as other activities.
ALL ACTIVITIES ARE SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE BUT CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED AT ALL TIMES.

East Cleveland Image Archive

There can be no doubt that the East Cleveland Image Archive housed at Loftus Library will play a big part in the “Iron Age to Digital Age” exhibition. The diagram below shows how images are panning out with regard to East Cleveland Villages. We think that we will place images geographically around the 8 screens. I have edited the obvious ones first andt here are another 938 still to be placed into a location.

Marske Square 5th June.

About 300 walkers in all left Marske Square to walk to Redcar Boating Lake, some walked on the beach while others kept to the pavement but all arrived safely. After a short stop for photo’s most people then walked back the same way. A very enjoyable day which I understand will be repeated in 2011. So wash those tee-shirts and put them safely away for next year!!!

“Annual MND Awareness Day”

Saturday 5th June 2010

“Morning of Music”:
This will take place betweeen 10am & 12.30am in Marske Square, invited are Country & Western singers, Marske Brass Band, Robsons Acadamy Irish Dancers plus Young Entertainers & hopefully others.

“Walk to D’feet – Sponsored Walk”
The walkers will be sent on their way by “Voice of the Boro” Alastair Brownlee”, Ali will also be taking part with his pet dog Benjamin. The walk will start at 1pm from Marske Square to Redcar Boating Lake. All registered walkers get a Free ‘T’ Shirt to walk in to help raise awareness of this terrible disease along the route.

We are calling the walk “Walking for Paul” in memory of my dear friend Paul Stott who lost his two & a half year battle against MND last month.

Walk That Walk

Heritage and Health walked hand in hand as a small team visited Marske to take “Digital Postcards” today. The walk began at Winkies Castle Folklore Museum and followed a route set up by Joan Russel. Joan had made up a book of the route complete with heritage images of several locations and the team set off to take current pictures of each site.

Joan gave a running commentary on what proved to be a most interesting afternoon. When we reached the beach we got talking about Marske Fishermans Choir and then the fishing industry in general which prompted Barry to tell us about the Tuna steaks he had marinading in Soy Sauce, Honey and Garlic (our mouths watered !) The walk finished by the grave of Captain Cooks father in the Marske cemetery. The finished images will end up in the Octorama tour which you can read about here.
