Marske Fishermen’s ChoirMarske Fishermen’s Choir was not actually founded, it evolved in 1968. During the mid 1960’s after a day’s fishing some of the lads would go to the Ship Inn, where those that could, would play musical instuments and sing and others joined in with the singing. Any excuse was made for a sing song, birthdays, anniversaries or boat launchings. The songs were sung in unison and with great gusto, from this background the Choir was born.Their first concert was performed in December 1968 in the Coatham Hotel, Redcar at a pensioners’ party. Since then the Choir has gone from strength to strength with up to 30 concerts a year between September to the end of March.Over the years the Choir have appeared all over Britain at many different events such as Tall Ship Festivals, anniversaries and naming ceremonies for the RNLI also appearing on BBC “Songs of Praise” programme from Liverpool and features on BBC Look North and Tyne Tees television news programmes. On 17th December 2008 they were presented with the “Freedom of the Borough” of Redcar and Cleveland at Gisborough Hall, Guisborough by the then Lord Mayor Mike Findley. For more information about the choir go to website: www.marskefishermenschoir.co.uk |
